How to turn an image into a Perler bead pattern

A practical workflow for converting photos and icons into printable Perler bead patterns with a color count.

Choose a simple source image

Perler bead projects work best when the source image has a clear subject, strong edges, and a limited number of colors. Icons, character art, logos, stickers, and simple pet photos usually convert better than busy landscapes.

Pick a grid before you chase detail

Start with 32x32 for charms and small gifts. Move to 48x48 or 64x64 only when the pattern needs more facial detail or readable text. A larger grid gives the converter more pixels, but it also increases bead count and ironing time.

Use the color count as a checklist

After conversion, review the color count table before you build. The table helps you sort beads by color and spot colors that only appear once or twice. Those tiny color islands are often good candidates for manual cleanup.

Verify colors with real beads

Screen colors are approximations. Different monitors and lighting can make a bead look warmer, cooler, brighter, or darker than the physical material. For a large project, compare the exported chart with the beads in your tray before ironing.
